|Rugby Legends 2012
Our sell out “Rugby Legends” event returned in 2012 on February 29th in New York.
We held our 4th HSBC Rugby Legends on Wednesday February 29th and had our most successful event to date raising $115,000 on the night for Sparks, Play Rugby USA and St George’s Society of NY. This was a record breaking evening and took total donations from Captain’s Knock events to over $650,000.
Photos of the night can be seen here.
The evening kicked-off with Dan Lyle proudly describing the growth of Rugby in the USA having earlier that month presided over the successful USA 7′s in Vegas. He also introduced USA Eagle and former captain Mike Petri and newly appointed men’s team coach Mike Tolkin to the crowd.
Dan then invited Jeremy Guscott to the stage to host the evening and welcome the other legends into the room with his usual wit and charm.
Once the evening was under way, first to join Jeremy on stage was World Cup winner Steve Thompson, who had recently announced his retirement from the game. As well as some banter about England’s notorious off-field antics in the last World Cup, the crowd had to guess Steve’s all-time XV, that he played with or against, to win a signed ball.
The charities ran a silent and main auction through the night which included sporting memorabilia, luxury items and ‘money can’t buy,’ experiences. British Airways, who fly the legends over, also provided some drama by generously donating First Class tickets to London as one of the main auction items. A big thank you to Laurence McCabe who volunteered his services to act as auctioneer and flew over from Dublin especially.
Later Michael Lynagh, Scott Gibbs, Jason Leonard & Paul Wallace joined Jerry on the stage for a Q&A which covered their stellar careers as well as their opinion on this year’s 6 Nations.
The event wrapped up at 10:30 but many ventured over to where the legends were staying at The London Hotel for an after party where the fun and stories continued.
Thanks to all those who attended and we look forward to your continued support.
